Data engineer: salary, day rates & demand.
Assessing a data engineer starts with the data they have to make reliable and usable. Repairing fragile pipelines, connecting a new source and preparing data for analysis call for different experience. The budget also depends on production responsibilities: monitoring, incidents, documentation, handover to the team. Ask about the trade-offs between freshness, quality and cost: the answer tells you more than a list of tools. When comparing salary or daily rates, describe the pipelines, the users, the expected autonomy and the operating constraints. Seniority is judged on situations actually handled, not on years.

In short
- What they do
- Builds and maintains the processing that makes data usable, along with the quality and freshness checks that go with it.
- When you call on them
- Fragile pipelines to take over, a new source to connect, data to prepare for analysis, a pipeline to industrialise.
- What moves the price
- The number and condition of the sources, the freshness expected, responsibility in production, and what has to be documented and handed over.
- Related roles

The role
Role
A data engineer connects source applications, databases and files with the ways a business uses data. They develop the processing, add the checks and document how it works, within the frequency, quality and access requirements defined with users. Depending on the team, they may also contribute to platform architecture and to running it in production. The role exists in software vendors, in the companies using the data and on client assignments, and the balance between building and operating shifts with each of those settings: building a pipeline and keeping it running in production are two distinct commitments, demanding neither the same availability nor the same knowledge of the business area involved. That balance, more than the size of the team, is what describes the job.
Responsibilities
Collect and transform data using explicit rules, then make it available within an agreed frequency and quality. A pipeline is a sequence of processing steps: maintaining it requires understanding its dependencies, the data expected and what happens when a step fails. The data engineer implements the quality and freshness checks suited to the use case, and documents the transformation rules, the rejection cases and the restart conditions. They monitor processing, investigate the cause of a failure and prepare recovery, along with the handover to the teams responsible. They distinguish a processing fault from an inconsistency coming from the source, and discuss it with business owners when a rule still needs clarifying.

Typical paths
Paths into the role come from development or database administration moving towards data engineering, from analyst work widened to building the flows, and from application operations, where production constraints are already familiar. Training ranges from engineering school to a master's in computer science or statistics, and career changes arrive through development or data administration. Progression leads towards broader pipelines, a technical lead role within the team, or data architecture. Tools are chosen according to storage, volumes and operating conditions: what someone has built and maintained places their experience better than the list of technologies they mention.
What moves the budget
Production responsibility
Separate pipeline development from monitoring, incident handling and data recovery.
Source complexity
Describe volumes, formats, frequency of changes and expected quality checks.
Autonomy and handover
Define the architecture decisions delegated to the professional and the skills available to maintain the pipelines.

For companies: three situations to discuss at interview
| Situation | What to discuss |
|---|---|
| Handle late-arriving data | Ask how they would handle an event arriving after the daily process has run. Discuss the period to recalculate, how to prevent duplicates and how to check results already shared. |
| Change a shared data schema | Use a renamed source field as an example. Discuss how they would identify affected users, manage the transition between versions and test compatibility. |
| Balance performance and cost | Explore a process that has become too slow. What would they measure to locate the bottleneck before adding resources? Which alternatives would they compare against the actual use case? |
To prepare before the conversation
- The sources involved, available historical data and known changes.
- The acceptable delay between data arrival and use.
- Existing processes, observed runtimes and cost constraints.
- The people using the results and the environments available for testing changes.
Your questions about the data engineer role
How should two data engineer daily rates be compared?
Compare the same scope: sources, processing frequency, production duties and autonomy. Check on-site requirements and expected handover too. A rate alone describes neither assignment complexity nor responsibility.
Can a daily rate be converted directly into a salary?
No. An independent professional has non-billable days, expenses and different protections. The calculator provides an estimate based on explicit assumptions; it does not establish a certain salary equivalent.
What salary range is useful for a data engineer?
The range of €35,000–€60,000 gross per year covers 80% of pay offered in job advertisements, including fixed and variable pay. It brings together different experience levels. To position a role, define production duties, architecture decisions and the expected level of autonomy.
Does a data engineer develop artificial intelligence models?
That is not a standard responsibility in every role. They may prepare data and integrate processing. Model design and evaluation must be defined according to the professional's skills and team structure.
Must a data engineer master every cloud service?
No. Assess the services used in the relevant environment and the ability to explain choices, controls and handover.
How does the role differ from a data analyst?
A data engineer focuses on data flows and their operation. A data analyst focuses on exploration, metrics and presenting findings. Some tasks overlap depending on the team; responsibilities must remain explicit.
How can I describe work without a confidential document?
Describe sources abstractly, explain the problem, your role and the controls implemented. State what you can share and distinguish a reconstructed example from a client deliverable.
Who does a data engineer work with?
Source owners explain the data; analysts and data scientists set out how it will be used; application and security teams arrange the environment and the access rights. A data analyst explores the data and produces analysis, a data scientist frames and evaluates models, an MLOps engineer prepares their deployment and monitoring. The boundaries overlap from one team to the next, but building a pipeline is not the same as validating a model.
