Social care facility leadership
Care homes, disability services or social care groups: we look for the director who knows the people you support and your managing organisation. You choose, they lead the facility.
Know the teams.
Understand the people they support.
You may need to replace a director, coordinate several facilities or move a quality programme forward. WheelOfWork’s Health & Social Care team searches for directors, managers and quality professionals, for permanent roles and for assignments. We take time to understand the people you support, your teams and the organisation’s purpose before we introduce anyone.

Care homes, disability services or social care groups: we look for the director who knows the people you support and your managing organisation. You choose, they lead the facility.
Area leadership, operations management or organisation work: we look for the professional who knows how head office, regions and facilities cooperate. You choose, they work with your teams.
Quality programmes, digital care records or change management: we look for the professional who knows your facilities and your teams. You choose, they work with them.
A social care facility needs to manage a transition. The management team remains in place, and the governing body wants to retain a leadership contact for priority matters.
Appoint a leader to provide interim cover, support managers and prepare for the future director to take over.
Several facilities need to share functions. Local directors need clear responsibilities, contact points and a coordination schedule with head office.
Define common ways of working, prepare implementation with teams and monitor adjustments needed on the ground.
Findings and feedback inform an improvement plan. Actions are shared among several owners, but teams and governing bodies lack a clear view of progress.
Prioritise actions, define owners and establish shared monitoring that the facility’s teams can continue.
Not automatically, and it is the people supported who decide. A care home, a home support service and a disability service have neither the same teams nor the same partners.
A residential facility, a home support service and a group bringing several activities together involve different working relationships: families, health professionals, inspection and funding authorities, local partners. Describe your teams, your partners and the questions that come up most often before looking at anyone's background.
In the meeting, start from a real difficulty: two managers are waiting on a decision about a shared resource, a service needs support from headquarters, a family is contesting a placement. Listen to how the person frames the problem, whom they would involve and what they would decide alone.
Listen to what they are looking for as well: the people they want to work with, the size of team that interests them and how they want to practise leadership.
That depends on what they are told, and when. A director who arrives without the reason for the search having been explained starts with a deficit that takes months to close.
Explain why you are searching now: a departure, a coordination problem, a project that needs a lead. Teams in this sector have often seen several directors in a short time, and they judge the announced duration and the real room to decide before anything else.
Introduce the support around the role: local managers, HR and finance contacts, quality leads, local partners. Say how requests move between the facility and headquarters, and what the person can settle without referring upwards.
Prepare with the managing organisation how they will be introduced: their role, their first meetings and the subjects they need to understand before deciding.
Responsibility is not suspended while a leadership post is vacant. Say what is owed, to whom, and by when, before the person arrives.
List the deadlines in the period: the evaluation process, contract-of-objectives follow-up, activity reports, the funding dialogue with the supervising authority, authorisations and renewals, responses to inspections. Each has a recipient and a date, and none depends on the length of the assignment.
Say who signs what in the absence of the substantive director, and what governance keeps. An interim director who discovers an evaluation file three weeks before it is due cannot usefully take it over.
For a quality improvement plan, say who carries each action and where it is reviewed.
Whatever has been written down and handed to a named person. For an interim leadership assignment, the handover is prepared from the first month.
For leadership continuity, managers need the decisions taken, the commitments made to families and partners, and the state of live files with the funding authority. For coordination across several facilities, the shared way of working agreed, the functions pooled and the adjustments still open. For an improvement plan, the prioritised actions, their owners and the follow-up.
Identify the people who will take over at the start, and plan the conversations with them during the assignment rather than at the end. For a permanent appointment, the same material serves to prepare the arrival and the first months.
Social Care Facility Director: role and skillsUnderstand the work, the skills involved and the questions worth asking.
The search can cover these roles. Experience is assessed against the people supported, facility type, team and delegated authority. Having led an EHPAD care home does not establish suitability for every disability facility or service.
Both searches can be prepared together if the temporary assignment, permanent role and handover are clearly distinguished. The recruitment timetable should remain consistent with the responsibilities assigned during interim cover.
The scope presented here covers leadership, management, organisation and quality. Care delivery or medical recruitment is described separately: it does not follow from a search for a facility director.
A scope spanning several sites may call for an area director, operations manager or organisational consultant. Specify facility, area and head office responsibilities to clarify the role’s level of authority.
WheelOfWork searches for professionals for leadership, organisation and quality roles. These introductions are not an evaluation body’s service. Internal improvement work and the facility’s formal evaluation follow separate frameworks.
Describe the people supported, facilities involved, reason for the search and teams in place. Together, we identify the experience and working conditions required. Conversations with professionals then help prepare for their arrival and agree which matters need follow-up with the managing organisation.
