Contractor management or umbrella employment: which to choose?
In French the two names look alike, people confuse them, and yet they describe opposite mechanisms: employee status on one side, an arrangement for invoicing between independents on the other. This guide compares them point by point, from the legal framework to social protection, from cost to autonomy, so the choice rests on your situation rather than on vocabulary.
Umbrella employment makes you an employee of the umbrella company: a payslip, contributions, the protection of the French general scheme. Contractor management leaves you independent: your own company invoices the contractor management company, which contracts with and invoices the client for you. The first is chosen for social protection, the second for simplicity and control over your activity.

Two similar names, two opposite logics
Umbrella employment is employee status governed by the French Labour Code; contractor management is a service relationship between independents.
Umbrella employment is a status: you become an employee of an umbrella company, which pays you a salary out of the fees invoiced to your client. It is defined by the French Labour Code and a sector-wide collective agreement.
Contractor management is not a status: it is a contractual arrangement between independents. You keep your own company and the contractor management company contracts with the client, invoices on your behalf and passes on the value of the work.
The umbrella consultant is an employee; the contractor-managed consultant stays independent.
The confusion is costly in both directions: expecting contractor management to provide employee protection it does not arrange, or paying contributions under umbrella employment that your situation does not justify.
Umbrella employment: employment governed by law
A three-way relationship, an employment contract, a payslip: the arrangement is defined in articles L1254-1 and following of the French Labour Code.
Umbrella employment organises a three-way relationship: you, the umbrella company and the client company. You find your assignments and negotiate your terms; the umbrella company signs an employment contract with you, invoices the client and turns the fees into salary.
The framework is set by articles L1254-1 to L1254-31 of the French Labour Code, completed by a sector-wide collective agreement. That agreement sets, among other things, a minimum monthly pay for the umbrella employee.
Social protection under the general scheme: health, pension, income protection, and unemployment insurance under the ordinary conditions.
Commercial autonomy, but employee status: that is the very definition of umbrella employment.
A payslip: your net pay is calculated after social contributions and the umbrella company's management fee.
A secured framework: the umbrella company contracts with the client and must hold a financial guarantee to operate.
Cost is the counterpart: employee and employer contributions, plus a management fee whose rate varies between companies and with the services included. Compare them against your real volume of activity rather than on the headline rate.
Contractor management: independent, without running the invoicing relationship
Your company invoices the contractor management company, which contracts with and invoices the client: you stay independent from start to finish.
Under contractor management you are nobody's employee. Your company already exists and continues to exist: it carries your activity, your tax position and your social protection. What contractor management arranges is the contractual and financial relationship with the client: contracts, compliance — the KYC large accounts ask for — invoicing and payment tracking.
In practice at WheelOfWork: you report your activity, the client approves it, your company invoices WheelOfWork, and WheelOfWork invoices the client. For a day rate of €700 excluding VAT, the fee is €35 excluding VAT: the client receives an invoice for €735 excluding VAT per day. The calculator on the contractor management page applies this mechanism to your own figures.
Your company invoices WheelOfWork, which invoices the client: you stay independent.
What the arrangement does not do, and does not claim to do: pay you a salary, make contributions on your behalf, open unemployment rights. Your protection remains that of your independent status: a choice to make knowingly, not a blind spot.
Protection, cost, autonomy: side by side
Four differences shape the choice: status, social protection, the cost of the arrangement, and who owns your activity.
Status: an employee of the umbrella company on one side; independent with your own company on the other.
Social protection: the full general scheme, unemployment included under conditions, against the protection attached to your independent status and to the insurance you choose.
Cost: employee and employer contributions plus a management fee, against contractor management fees set on the invoicing, with no conversion into salary.
Ownership of the activity: under contractor management, your revenue, your trading history and your client base stay inside your own company; under umbrella employment, your activity lives within the umbrella company's framework.
One last criterion: how it reads from the client side. What a procurement department wants is a solid contractual counterparty and a clean invoicing route. Both arrangements provide that, each in its own way.
Which arrangement for your situation?
Test your need for protection, whether your company already exists, and your horizon: the answer is deduced more than decreed.
Umbrella employment is worth discussing if you are testing independence without setting up a company, if the continuity of your rights — unemployment in particular — weighs heavily in your decision, or if your visibility on future assignments is short.
Contractor management is worth discussing if your company exists and works, if you want to keep full control of your activity and its tax position, and if what you lack is not a status but a solid contractual and invoicing framework facing large accounts.
The right arrangement answers your need for protection, not a fashion.
The two are not mutually exclusive over time: you can start under umbrella employment, then set up your company and move to contractor management. The consultants path describes how those stages are organised with our teams.
What WheelOfWork arranges, and what it does not
WheelOfWork does contractor management, built on the assignments its talent agents find; not umbrella employment.
WheelOfWork is not an umbrella company: we do not pay salaries and we do not run payslips. Our arrangement is contractor management, and it is built on what we actually do: talent agents who know your speciality, find the assignments and follow the collaboration.
Around the assignment, the arrangement takes on contracts, KYC, invoicing and payments, with a personal space to track activity reports, invoices and messages. How it works in detail, on the company side as on the consultant side, is on the contractor management page.
Key takeaways.
- Umbrella employment: you are an employee of the umbrella company, with general-scheme protection.
- Contractor management: you stay independent; the arrangement handles contracts, invoicing and payments.
- Compare against your own situation: need for protection, existing company, horizon of assignments.
- The two can follow one another within a single independent career.
You may also be wondering…
Is contractor management governed by the French Labour Code?
No. Contractor management falls under ordinary contract law between companies: it is a service relationship, not a status. Umbrella employment, by contrast, is defined by the French Labour Code (articles L1254-1 and following) and a sector-wide collective agreement.
Can you claim unemployment benefit under contractor management?
Not through this arrangement: you stay independent and fall under the protection of your own status. It is umbrella employment that, by creating an employment contract, can open unemployment insurance rights under the ordinary conditions.
What does contractor management cost at WheelOfWork?
The fee is added to your work on the invoice sent to the client: for €700 excluding VAT per day of work, the client receives an invoice for €735 excluding VAT. The calculator on the contractor management page applies the mechanism to your own figures.
Can you move from umbrella employment to contractor management?
Yes. Umbrella employment can serve to test the activity; setting up a company then lets you switch to contractor management and keep control of your work. The two simply cannot be combined on the same assignment.
