What is a talent agent?
The word has been at the heart of WheelOfWork from the start, and it raises eyebrows: a talent agent, like an agent for an artist or an athlete? The image is not wrong. Here is what a talent agent actually does for an independent consultant, and what separates the model from a staffing firm or a marketplace.
A talent agent supports independent consultants: they find and qualify assignments, arrange the contractual and administrative framework, then follow the collaboration over time. Unlike a staffing firm, you stay independent: you do not work for your agent, you work with them.

An agent, in the literal sense
The talent agent represents independent consultants: finding assignments, qualifying needs and defending the interests of the professional they support.
An independent consultant is a specialist in their field. Prospecting, qualifying client needs, negotiating and handling administration are a second job, and it eats into the first. The talent agent takes that second job on: they represent the consultant, as an agent represents an artist or an athlete.
In practice, the agent finds and qualifies assignments, introduces the consultant to companies whose need genuinely matches their experience, then stays the point of contact for both parties throughout. The consultant stays independent from start to finish: their own company, their own invoicing, their own choices.
You do not work for WheelOfWork: you work with it.
What the agent brings, assignment after assignment
Access to needs that never reach the marketplaces, serious qualification of the brief, an organised contractual framework, and follow-up over time.
Access to the work: some assignments, particularly at large accounts, go directly to trusted partners rather than being posted on marketplaces. The agent opens that door.
Qualification: before any introduction, the agent clarifies the need with the company — remit, stakeholders, conditions — so the consultant decides on facts.
The framework: contracts, the compliance large accounts ask for, invoicing and payments are handled through contractor management, without touching the consultant's independence.
Follow-up: the agent stays present during the assignment and prepares the next one, rather than disappearing once the introduction is made.
Why this is not a staffing firm
In a staffing firm the consultant is an employee of the company placing them. With a talent agent they stay independent and keep their own invoicing.
A staffing firm delivers services performed by its own employees, sent out on assignment to its clients. The consultant draws a fixed salary, and the firm largely decides where they work.
The talent agent model reverses the relationship: the consultant is independent, chooses their assignments, and invoices their work at the rate agreed with the client. The agent is paid through the fees of the contractor management arrangement, set on the assignment's invoicing, not as a margin on a salary.
A staffing firm places its employees; an agent represents independents.
The difference also shows over time: a staffing firm manages a headcount; an agent builds a path. Growing into new skills, changing the type of assignment, moving from freelance work to interim management — that is the thread the agent follows with you.
And why it is not a marketplace
A marketplace introduces people at scale; an agent is a named person, specialised in your field, who knows the situations you work in.
Marketplaces render a real service: volume, visibility, autonomy. But the selection rests on the consultant alone, and the relationship usually stops at the introduction.
A talent agent is a person, not an algorithm: at WheelOfWork each agent specialises by field — IT and digital, engineering, finance, health and social care, interim management, executive search — and speaks their consultants' vocabulary. That is what lets them qualify a brief seriously, and argue for a profile with something other than keywords.
How it works at WheelOfWork
One agent per field, the WoW application to track assignments and invoicing, and contractor management as the contractual framework.
The consultant presents their background and meets the agent for their field. When an assignment matches, the agent qualifies it, arranges the conversations and frames the conditions. During the assignment, the WoW personal space tracks activity reports, invoices and messages; contractor management carries the contracts and the payments.
On the company side, the same contact qualifies the needs and introduces professionals whose track record they know: the companies page describes that side of the model.
Where to start
A conversation with the agent for your field is enough to tell whether the model suits you, with no commitment.
The simplest route is to present your background through the consultants path: speciality, experience, availability, conditions. The agent for your field gets back to you to understand what you are looking for, and tells you honestly what the pool of assignments can offer.
If your thinking is mostly about status, our guide on contractor management or umbrella employment sets out the framework; if it is about the interim leadership profession, the guide on how to become an interim manager takes over.
Key takeaways.
- The talent agent represents independents: assignments, qualification, framework, follow-up.
- Unlike a staffing firm, you stay independent and keep your own invoicing.
- Unlike a marketplace, the agent is a named person, specialised by field.
- The contractual and financial framework runs through contractor management, not employment.
You may also be wondering…
Is a talent agent a recruiter?
No. A recruiter works for the company doing the hiring; a talent agent supports independent consultants over time, assignment after assignment. The two meet on one point: qualifying the brief seriously before any introduction.
What does a talent agent cost the consultant?
The economics are those of contractor management: fees set on the assignment's invoicing, visible on the invoice sent to the client. For a day rate of €700 excluding VAT, for instance, the client receives an invoice for €735 excluding VAT. The calculator on the contractor management page applies the mechanism to your own figures.
What is the difference between a talent agent and a staffing firm?
Status and relationship: a staffing firm places its own employees on assignment and pays them a salary; a talent agent represents independents who choose their assignments and invoice their work. You do not work for your agent, you work with them.
Which fields does WheelOfWork support consultants in?
Six fields, each with its own agents: IT and digital, engineering, interim management, finance, audit and legal, health and social care, executive search. The expertise pages set out the specialisms covered in each.
