Health and social care facility director: salary, day rates & demand.
Facility size says little about the scope of a health and social care leadership role. What counts is the people supported, the management structure and the relationship with the governing organisation. Taking over may mean stabilising teams, restoring budget oversight or advancing the service plan. To interpret compensation, specify the employment arrangements and the delegated authority, then the presence requirements and the number of facilities. For a transition assignment, also define what must be handed over to the next director. Without that, you are comparing roles that share a title and little else.

The role
Role
A social care facility director is responsible for running and managing a facility, connecting its plan, the resources available and the work of the teams within the authority delegated by the governing body. The scope varies with the people supported, the services provided and the managing organisation: the title alone does not define it. The brief specifies which decisions the director takes, which they prepare for the governing body and which belong to other professionals, and that division is the essential starting point before taking up the role. Responsibility for a facility does not replace that of the coordinating physician, the care staff or other qualified professionals — in a care home or any other setting, leadership, support and care cooperate within their respective remits, so that a clinical decision is never implicitly assigned to an operational assignment.
Responsibilities
The role should define the running of the facility, the management of team leaders, the monitoring of resources and the relationships with the managing organisation, with the delegated decisions and required approvals identified for each. Quality matters, projects and partner relationships have to connect to support that is actually available. A task list alone does not explain the post: what matters is the recurring deadlines, the decision-making meetings, the matters under way and the issues awaiting a decision. The director needs to know how to draw on team managers and when to involve area management or head office. Cooperation is prepared rather than assumed: allocating decisions, making sure support is available, sharing findings and tracking open issues, while protecting confidential information about the people supported and the organisations involved.

Typical paths
The CAFDES, the French certificate of aptitude for directors of social intervention facilities and services, is the training dedicated to these roles. It certifies competencies without by itself establishing suitability for every post, and it is not the only route: master's degrees in the management of health and social care organisations lead there too, as do paths through deputy management or senior care roles. The qualifications required are checked post by post with the managing organisation, since the rule is not the same everywhere. Experience is then read by population served, leadership scope and delegated authority, and comparable experience should help someone understand the facility while still leaving time to learn its practices and its partners.

For companies: three situations to discuss at interview
| Situation | What to discuss |
|---|---|
| Listen to the people receiving support | Ask how recurring feedback about daily routines was considered with staff, translated into an adjustment and explained to the people affected. |
| Support managers facing difficulties | Explore a situation involving conflicting instructions or poor coordination. Ask about the conversations held, responsibilities clarified and support provided to frontline managers. |
| Follow up on a change | Start with a revised way of working. How did the director gather feedback, identify persistent difficulties and decide what needed to change from the original plan? |
To prepare before the conversation
- The people supported, service arrangements and existing ways for them to share their views.
- The management structure, available support and vacant roles.
- An anonymised summary of recurring difficulties and actions already underway.
- Current changes, the people responsible and upcoming decisions.
Your questions about the social care facility director role
What salary range is useful for a social care facility director?
The range of €39,000–€68,000 gross per year, including fixed and variable pay, covers 80% of salaries offered in job advertisements. It brings together different facility types and service users. Compare delegated authority, teams and the number of sites before positioning an offer. A transition assignment needs its own budget.
Does transition leadership have the same objectives as permanent recruitment?
Responsibilities may overlap, but a transition assignment must specify period priorities, delegated decisions and handover. Permanent recruitment also needs to consider the service plan the director will lead over time.
What should be shared in the first discussion?
Describe the people supported, team organisation, delegated authority, difficulties and forthcoming deadlines. Avoid identifiable information about service users when it is not needed.
Are EHPAD Director and Social Care Facility Director the same role?
EHPAD leadership is one setting for this role. The people supported, organisation and care relationships define responsibilities; other social care facilities may require different experience.
Is care experience enough to lead a facility?
It can give an understanding of daily work. The role still calls for an assessment of management, resources, governance and the qualifications the assignment requires.
Is CAFDES the only possible qualification route?
It is a training route dedicated to these leadership roles. Required qualifications must be checked for the specific post with the managing organisation, without assuming the same rule applies to every facility.
What changes with an interim assignment?
It adds a defined time horizon and a handover to prepare. Responsibilities, delegated authority and support still need to be specified; a temporary role does not make them implicit.
Who does a social care facility director work with?
With the governing body, the frontline management, the support functions and the partners across the local area. The director also takes account of what service users and their families express. Cooperation with the coordinating physician and the care teams is set out explicitly: clinical decisions rest with the qualified professionals, not with the director.
