Before we talk

Prepare the search and the arrival

Describe the facility, the people supported, the service plan and the matters waiting for the director. Include delegated authority, available support and expected time on site.

  1. Which facility or service type, population served and responsibilities determine the leadership experience required?
  2. Which management support, budgets and operational matters will the director take on, and what authority will the governing body delegate?
  3. Is the need for temporary cover or a permanent appointment, and how will onboarding and handover be organised?

Frequently asked

Social care facility leadership: your questions

Can an EHPAD director lead a MAS or IME facility?

Moving between facility types requires an assessment of knowledge of the people supported, care arrangements, partners and teams. Assessment focuses on comparable responsibilities and the role’s requirements, beyond the director title alone.

Who defines an interim director’s delegated authority?

The managing organisation and its authorised governing bodies agree delegated authority and decision processes with the director. They must specify which decisions the director makes, which they propose and which require approval. An assignment covering several facilities falls within management of social care organisations.

Does the director replace the coordinating physician or head of care?

These are separate responsibilities. The director manages the facility’s operations and works with care leads within their respective remits. The brief should identify these working relationships without implicitly transferring clinical decisions.

Must a successor be selected before interim cover starts?

The assignment can begin while recruitment is still open. It must specify who makes decisions, which documents will be handed over and how responsibilities will change when the permanent director arrives.

How should we assess the qualifications required for the role?

Start by describing the facility, its operating framework and the authority to be delegated. Qualifications are checked for that specific role with the managing organisation. A qualification or leadership experience does not establish suitability for every facility.
