Transition CFO: salary, day rates & demand.
A transition CFO takes responsibility for the finance function within a defined period and assignment. The need may be leadership continuity, better cash visibility or a reliable closing schedule to restore. Weigh the daily rate against the delegated decisions, the state of the team and the work required: a leadership remit and extra accounting capacity do not cost the same. Before discussing the budget, set out the priorities, the governance counterparts, the expected presence and the handover arrangements. The stated duration is a scoping assumption, to adjust to the actual assignment. Availability and the start date are confirmed with the individual professional.

In short
- What they do
- Leads finance for a defined period: team, closings, treasury and reporting, through to handover to a successor.
- When you call on them
- A vacant finance department, treasury without visibility, a closing calendar running late, an organisation that has to change.
- What moves the price
- The decisions actually delegated, the state of the team and the accounts, the rhythm of presence, and what has to be handed over.
- Related roles
- Transition operations director, business controller, chief accountant, treasurer.
The role
Role
An interim CFO temporarily leads the finance function of a company or an entity, connecting team management, financial deadlines and the decisions taken by general management. The brief specifies the responsibilities delegated, the resources available and the handover arrangements for a successor or for the managers taking the function back. The role combines organising the team, running financial management and contributing to governance, and its temporary nature changes the time horizon: learning how the organisation works and handing it on have to be built into the assignment, alongside real responsibility for the agreed scope. Taking up a vacant function and steering one that is already running are two different commitments, and that distinction describes the assignment better than the size of the company does.
Responsibilities
Set the team's priorities and coordinate closing, forecasting, treasury and reporting within the agreed scope, making the assumptions understandable to management and preparing the decisions that follow. What the role involves day to day depends on the situation: holding a financial calendar, shifting responsibilities between headquarters and subsidiaries, or making forecasts more useful. The interim CFO does not produce everything personally — the work is knowing who prepares the information, who checks it, who explains the variances and what those variances help decide. The brief should state which decisions they take themselves and which remain with the governing body. For working capital, financial analysis is coordinated with the people responsible for collections, payments and inventory, so that actions are not implicitly assigned to finance alone.

Typical paths
Routes into the role come from management control or a chief accountant position widened to the finance department, from audit or consulting moved in-house, and from CFOs in post who turn to interim work after several long assignments. Training ranges from business school to chartered accountancy and finance master's degrees, and practice in managing a team counts as much as the qualification. The contexts someone has led — group or subsidiary, number of entities, a change of reporting, a treasury calendar — place their experience better than a list of software. Progression leads towards multi-entity scopes, the finance department of a group, or a succession of interim assignments. What matters as much as command of the tools is the ability to take up the function and then hand it over.

For companies: three situations to discuss at interview
| Situation | What to discuss |
|---|---|
| Examine an uncertain cash forecast | Use an expected receipt with an uncertain payment date. Ask how they would check the assumption, compare scenarios and explain which management decisions depend on that information. |
| Allocate urgent finance work | Describe several simultaneous deadlines and an understaffed team. Ask which work takes priority, which checks must remain in place and what additional support or decisions they would request. |
| Present an incomplete initial assessment | Explore preparation for a management meeting: how would they distinguish established facts, assumptions and unknowns, then define the checks needed before recommending a decision? |
To prepare before the conversation
- Upcoming cash requirements and assumptions still to be confirmed.
- The financial reporting calendar and delays already identified.
- Key managers’ availability, staff absences and support that could be brought in.
- Urgent decisions and the information still needed to prepare them.
Your questions about the interim CFO role
How can the budget for a transition CFO be estimated?
Start with the agreed day rate and planned working days, then identify expenses and any contractual fees separately. Use the calculator to adjust these inputs and compare assignment durations or working schedules.
Can a transition CFO start immediately?
The start depends on availability, scope, checks and contractual agreement. Discuss an urgent need with a talent agent; this profile does not guarantee a universal start time.
How can the salary range inform an interim CFO budget?
The range of €43,000–€95,000 gross per year covers 80% of advertised salaries for the employed CFO role, including fixed and variable pay. It provides context for an in-house position. A transition budget uses the agreed day rate, planned days, assignment and expenses; the salary does not convert directly into a fee.
Is an interim CFO a finance consultant?
They may have a consulting background, but the function described here includes temporary leadership responsibility. Accounting production or analysis without that responsibility is a different scope of work.
Must the assignment involve a crisis?
No. Succession, a vacancy or organisational change may justify the need. The context, decisions and exit conditions define the assignment.
Is a qualification enough to assess a candidate?
Education provides a reference point, complemented by responsibilities actually held. Assessment should examine management, financial cycles, decisions and contexts comparable to the proposed assignment.
How can you assess handover quality?
Check that those taking over own the deadlines, understand the assumptions and can handle open decisions. The handover must enable the organisation to continue financial management, beyond simply receiving documents.
Who does a transition CFO work with?
With executive management, the finance managers, the operational directors and the external contacts set out in the assignment: head office, subsidiaries, procurement, sales. Working capital is steered with the people responsible for collections, payments and inventory — it does not rest on finance alone. Cash forecasts depend on information and decisions spread across the company, so the handover covers how the work is done, not a set of files.
