Frequently asked
Interim finance leadership: your questions
How does this differ from a finance consultant?
An interim CFO leads a function and makes decisions within the scope agreed. A consultant may carry out defined analysis, closing or reporting work without taking on that leadership role. That work falls within finance, accounting and management accounting.
Does the CFO manage working capital alone?
Working capital depends on collections, payments and inventory, among other factors. The CFO provides the financial overview and coordinates actions with sales, procurement and operations according to each team's responsibilities.
Can we recruit the permanent CFO during the assignment?
Yes. Interim cover and permanent recruitment can proceed together. Specify the decisions to be made during the assignment, the matters left to the future CFO and the information to hand over.
How should we assess a candidate's fit?
Look at experience leading comparable teams and entities, financial cycles handled, decisions made and relationships with general management. Include requirements for on-site presence, availability and tools.
When should the assignment start?
Specify the expected start date and what must be held in the first weeks, a close or a financing deadline. An interim CFO mobilises faster than a permanent hire, without being immediate.
