Internal auditor: salary, day rates & demand.
An internal auditor examines a process, an organisation or a control framework against a defined scope. The work is judged on the quality of the findings, the evidence behind them and how they are discussed with the managers involved. An assignment focused on one process and a programme coordinated across several entities are two different jobs. To estimate the budget, specify the objectives, the available documents, the locations and the counterparts, then the independence arrangements and the level at which findings are presented. When an assignment needs a detailed grasp of operations, rate alone will not choose for you.

In short
- What they do
- Assesses whether a process works as intended, documents the findings and makes recommendations discussed with the managers concerned.
- When you call on them
- An audit plan to hold without enough headcount, a sensitive process to examine with an outside eye, a programme to coordinate across several sites.
- What moves the price
- The breadth of the scope, access to documents and people, the level of reporting expected, and the follow-up of actions after the assignment.
- Related roles
- Internal control officer, risk manager, external auditor, business controller.
The role
Role
An internal auditor provides independent assurance on how processes and controls actually work. They work from an audit plan, run each assignment in three stages — preparation, fieldwork, reporting back — and report to the leadership or to the audit committee. Their independence from the teams being audited is what gives the findings their value, and it is a matter of position rather than of seniority.
Responsibilities
Define the scope and objectives of an assignment with whoever commissioned it. Gather and analyse the evidence: documents, data, interviews, tests. Set out findings that are factual and traceable, then recommendations proportionate to the risks. Discuss the conclusions with the managers concerned before reporting back, and follow the implementation of the actions when the assignment provides for it.

Typical paths
A first post in an external audit firm followed by a move in-house; an internal career from management control or internal control towards audit; and engineering or IT profiles for systems audits. Training ranges from business school to accountancy qualifications, and professional certification establishes a body of knowledge rather than a track record. Progression leads towards leading an audit team, risk management, or internal control. What someone has audited, and how their findings were received, places their experience better than a list of standards.
What moves the budget
Audit scope
Define the processes, the entities, the objectives and how deep the examination has to go.
Access to evidence
Specify the documentation, the data, the counterparts and the travel to plan for.
Reporting and follow-up
Distinguish findings, recommendations, discussion with managers and any action follow-up.

A typical assignment
Scoping
Objective, scope and limits of access agreed with the client.
Fieldwork
Documents, interviews and tests across the agreed scope.
Reporting back
Findings, recommendations and discussion with the managers concerned.
Action follow-up
Implementation verified, where the contract provides for it.
Illustrative example, no client reference.
For companies: three situations to discuss at interview
| Situation | What to discuss |
|---|---|
| A manager disputes a finding | How they separate the established fact, the interpretation and the recommendation, and how they hold the discussion without losing the finding |
| A key document is not available | What they do with the gap: a documented limit of scope, an alternative test, or an alert to the client |
| Three entities, a tight timetable | How they prioritise by risk, split the work and keep a comparable method from one site to the next |
To prepare before the conversation
- The objective of the assignment and who commissioned it.
- The processes and entities concerned.
- The documents and data that can be accessed.
- Who receives the report and the level of follow-up expected.
Your questions about the internal auditor role
What salary range is useful for an internal auditor?
The range of €35,000–€65,000 gross per year covers 80% of advertised internal audit salaries, fixed and variable pay included. To position a role, define the entities covered, the travel, the independence required and the reporting level. A head of audit position is compared separately.
Does the daily rate include recommendation follow-up?
That depends on the contractual scope. State whether the assignment ends with reporting or includes later discussions and checks. Comparing rates without this distinction can conceal a workload difference.
How should a brief for this role be prepared?
Describe the objectives, the processes, the entities, the accessible documents and who receives the findings. Flag the access constraints and any conflicts of interest to examine before the assignment starts.
Can a freelance internal auditor be independent of an organisation they do not know?
Independence is a matter of position, not of seniority: they must neither have taken part in the process being audited nor report to the teams concerned. Not knowing the context at the outset is addressed by the scoping phase, and having no history in the organisation is often an advantage when findings are discussed.
How does this differ from an external auditor?
An external auditor certifies accounts against an accounting framework, for third parties. An internal auditor examines how processes and controls work, for the organisation's own leadership. The two pieces of work answer neither the same question nor to the same client.
How long does an internal audit assignment last?
From a few weeks for a single process to several months for a programme covering several entities. The duration follows from the scope, not the other way round: setting a duration before the scope is settled leads to work being cut back along the way.
