A departure or a transformation quickly disrupts a legal team’s priorities. An interim legal director takes temporary management responsibility on an explicit remit. You define with us the teams, the matters and the decisions to carry, and the working relationships with executive management, the business functions and outside counsel.
Taking charge of team management, visibility over deadlines and coordination with external counsel. The director clarifies working contacts, decision authority and the matters that need to be raised with executive management.

Frequently asked
Interim legal leadership: your questions
Does an interim legal director replace a law firm?
The assignment addresses an internal leadership need. External lawyers' work is scoped separately, while the interim director can coordinate their involvement within the limits of the leadership remit.
Does the leader automatically receive signing authority?
No. Signing authority does not follow from the job title. The brief identifies the decisions entrusted to the interim leader and those retained by the people designated to make them.
Can compliance or another function be included?
An additional function needs separate consideration and definition. It is not presumed to fall within legal leadership and must align with the skills required and responsibilities entrusted to the individual.
What needs to be organised for the handover?
The incoming leader needs continuity across the team, sensitive matters, deadlines and adviser relationships. Every open matter should have an identified contact and a clear next decision or action.
What responsibility does the legal director take on?
The assignment defines an internal leadership role: managing people, prioritising matters, allocating resources and coordinating external counsel. It identifies the entities and subjects covered, alongside decisions retained by executive management. The leader's place in decision-making processes needs to be explicit so teams know what they can decide and when to escalate.
The assignment alone does not establish signing authority, a corporate office or responsibility for another distinct function. These require separate consideration within the brief.
How does the leader work with business teams and counsel?
The director organises the relationship between the legal team, business leaders and external counsel. They clarify needs, assign matters and track decisions. Scoping distinguishes this management responsibility from the work of external lawyers and other functions whose scope and conditions need separate consideration, with clear ownership for each area of work.
Litigation and specific transactions need identified advisers and owners.
How can priorities remain visible through the handover?
Shared reporting makes priority matters, deadlines, pending decisions and resource commitments visible. It gives management the context needed to set priorities, without reducing legal work to a count of completed requests. The handover identifies the owner, current status and next decision for each sensitive matter, together with the relevant contacts.
For needs spanning several functions, explore Finance & Legal. The interim assignment remains focused on the responsibilities that have actually been entrusted to the leader.
Does the assignment cover ongoing litigation?
It can include oversight and coordination with the firm conducting the case. Running the proceedings themselves remains with the appointed external counsel.
