Interim Management

Keep quality leadership accountable when it matters

  • Non-conformities
  • Audits and certification
  • Supplier quality

A gap in quality leadership leaves issues unresolved, decisions pending and operations without a counterpart. An interim quality director takes temporary responsibility on a defined remit. We shape the assignment around the teams to lead, the situations to address and the decisions the leader will own, working with your operational teams and executive management.

Frequently asked

Interim quality leadership: your questions

Does the assignment guarantee certification?

No. The remit may include preparation and follow-up actions, but it does not determine the assessment body's decision. Expected work and assessment outcomes must remain distinct in the brief.

Can the director take responsibility for several sites?

Yes, when local and cross-site responsibilities are clearly defined. The brief should identify the contacts at each site, shared decisions and the resources available to manage and review the work.

Can supplier quality be the main focus?

Yes. The assignment can centre on suppliers, working with procurement and technical teams. Decisions and actions still need clear ownership, including matters requiring input from those other functions.

How does this differ from a one-off audit?

The interim director takes temporary responsibility within the business: managing people, making decisions and overseeing execution. An audit may inform the work, but it does not by itself define the assignment.

What belongs within the quality remit?

An assignment can cover one site, several entities, the quality system or supplier quality. It defines the products and activities included, the teams being led and working relationships with operations. Decisions about non-conformities, changes and priorities need a named owner, with clear routes for matters that cross functional boundaries.

Quality responsibility does not automatically include authority over production, procurement or research. Those working relationships are defined when the assignment is scoped.

How does quality leadership work with operations?

The interim quality director makes issues clear and takes the decisions within their remit. They organise the response with other functions, track actions and escalate disagreements requiring executive input. The role includes leading the team and maintaining the quality system, with responsibilities that remain clear when operational pressures affect priorities.

The work goes beyond producing an assessment. Decisions, action owners and follow-up arrangements must support the way teams work each day.

What should be reviewed and handed over?

Progress reviews may cover open non-conformities, overdue actions, recurring issues and preparation for upcoming assessments. Each measure should feed a decision and rest on data that can actually be read. The handover covers the sensitive matters, the responsibilities, the actions under way and the questions still needing management attention, each with a named owner.

Any certification follows its own assessment process. The assignment covers the quality responsibility entrusted to the leader, without guaranteeing certification or an audit outcome.

Can the assignment cover several standards at once?

Yes, where the remit says so. The director separates the requirements shared across standards from those specific to each, then organises the evidence expected for every one.
